Hike the spectacular Peruvian Rainbow Mountain trail

If you’re planning a trek to Rainbow Mountain, here’s a quick guide to help you make the most of your experience:

  • Choose the right time to visit: The best time to visit Rainbow Mountain is from April to October, during the dry season in the Andes. The weather is generally sunny and clear, making it easier to see the vibrant colors of the mountain.
  • Book a tour: It’s recommended to book a tour with a reputable operator to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Most tours include transportation to and from Cusco, a guide, and meals.
  • Prepare for the altitude: Rainbow Mountain is located at an altitude of over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), so it’s important to acclimate yourself to the altitude before attempting the trek. Spend a few days in Cusco or another high-altitude location before starting the trek.
  • Pack the essentials: Be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and warm clothing. The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s a good idea to pack layers and a rain jacket.
  • Start early: The trek to Rainbow Mountain takes around 6-7 hours round trip, so it’s best to start early in the morning to avoid crowds and to make it back before nightfall.
  • Take breaks and go at your own pace: The altitude can be challenging, so it’s important to take breaks and go at your own pace. Listen to your body and don’t push yourself too hard.
  • Enjoy the view: Once you reach the summit, take some time to soak in the stunning views of Rainbow Mountain and the surrounding Andes.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE RAINBOW MOUNTAIN TREKS

The Rainbow Mountains

The highlight of the trek is undoubtedly the Rainbow Mountains, which feature a stunning array of colors caused by mineral deposits in the surrounding rock formations. The colors range from deep reds to vibrant greens, blues, and purples, making for a truly mesmerizing sight.

The Rainbow Mountains

Scenic Views

The trek itself takes you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Andes, including snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, and alpine meadows. Along the way, you’ll also encounter traditional Andean villages and learn about the local culture and way of life.

High Altitude

The trek is not for the faint of heart, as it reaches elevations of over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet). This means you’ll need to acclimate to the altitude and be prepared for the physical demands of hiking at high altitude.

Challenging Terrain

The trek involves steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, and narrow paths, so it’s important to be physically fit and have some prior hiking experience. However, the stunning views and sense of accomplishment make it all worthwhile.

Cultural Experience

The Rainbow Mountain Trek offers a unique opportunity to learn about the local culture and interact with the Quechua people who call the region home. You’ll see traditional clothing, witness cultural ceremonies, and sample local cuisine.

Overall, trekking to Rainbow Mountain can be a challenging but rewarding experience. With the right preparation and mindset, you can enjoy the natural beauty and geological wonder of this incredible destination.

Incredible 1-Day Sacred Valley Tour We loved our 1 day Sacred Valley tour. Our guide Ray and our driver Fortu were great! Ray answered all of our questions about Peru history, politics, society so in-depth. Such an incredible guide! We also felt in great hands with Fortu as our driver. We had been on a couple other tours where the driving was a bit nerve wracking but Fortu made us feel very safe! We also really appreciated how Ray took photos for everyone in the group!

A tour review from someone who normally avoids tours. A friend and I had planned to visit Machu Picchu in March 2020. Finally we got around to rescheduling our trip and chose SAM travel. I am not one for group tours but have to say, if they were all like this, I would do more! We were so well handled before arrival by Eddy it faces us ease. My friend was coming in from CA and I was coming from MA so he was awesome handling our different schedules and questions. Our first day with Ray as a tour guide was amazing. He was knowledgeable, skilled with all our cameras and aware of the fact we wanted more than photos but a true understanding of the culture. Futura handled the winding rides in a way that comforted me even when I should have been nervous. We have days left in our trip but we are so happy and talked with others on the tour expressing the same. Highly recommend this company. Family owned and employing locals. All the things you could ask for when visiting such a sacred cultural location.

Private sight seeing day in Sacred Valley William and Antonio took great care of us. Prompt, informative and helpful. It’s a full day of driving and sightseeing but you will see a lot! It was just the two of us, our guide and driver. Highly recommend over a big group tour.

FOR UNIQUE PHOTOS AND VIDEOS THE INCA PATH IS THE BEST OPTION! If you love photography and wonderful views, the Inca trail of 4 days and 3 nights , is the perfect option; I went to photograph and film as is the crossing through this wonderful trail and I was marveled, Ray, is a very professional guide in his explanation and Fortunato the cook, along with team, left us delighted with the food.
