Best Information for the 7 Lakes Hike at Ausangate

Written by: Sam Travel | 20 June, 2026

One of the best trekking routes that can be done in one day is the hike to the 7 Lakes of Ausangate. Over time, this route has become popular as an alternative to the well-known Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake hikes in Cusco.

This beautiful collection of lakes, its impressive views, and the warmth of the local people will, without a doubt, surprise you. To discover its secrets, how to get there, and how wonderful this adventure is, keep reading!

What is Ausangate mountain?

Ausangate is the protective Apu (Mountain God) of Cusco. It is undoubtedly one of the largest mountains in the area, belonging to the Vilcanota mountain range.

It has an elevation of 6,385 meters above sea level and is the highest snow-capped mountain in Cusco together with Salkantay Mountain. It represents an important source of water for the region.

What are the 7 Lakes?

The so-called 7 Lakes of Ausangate are a group of green, turquoise, and light blue lakes that decorate and accompany the protective Apu Ausangate. They are called this because, after hiking through the mountains, you can reach a viewpoint from where you can admire several lakes around you.

Where are the 7 Lakes of Ausangate Located?

This attractive tourist route is located in the southern area of Cusco, in the province of Quispicanchis, district of Ocongate, about 200 kilometers from the city center.

To reach the main viewpoint, you need to complete a hike of nearly 12 kilometers full of beautiful landscapes.

Difficulty of the 7 Lakes of Ausangate Tour

Besides being stunning, this hike can be considered challenging because of the elevation of the viewpoint. Reaching almost 4,800 meters above sea level is what makes this tour somewhat difficult. However, the trail itself is not difficult; it is rocky and includes gradual ascents. The hike takes around 5 to 6 hours in total and covers nearly 16 kilometers.

Weather at the 7 Lakes of Ausangate

Many travelers have countless questions about the routes in Cusco, the hikes, and especially what to pack according to weather forecasts. Let me tell you that it is not possible to predict the weather in the mountains. One moment it can be very sunny, and the next completely cloudy. However, we can share some tips and comments about the area’s conditions.

Since it is located very close to a glacier and surrounded by mountains, the weather is usually cold and windy. For this reason, we recommend dressing in layers and bringing hats and warm jackets.

When is the best time to hike in Ausangate?

From May to September: The weather is dry with clear skies, bright sunshine, and low temperatures during the early hours of the day.

From October to April: The weather may include some rain, cloudy skies, and low temperatures.

Flora and fauna during the 7 Lakes tour

This is a classic Andean landscape, cold and with grasslands. In this type of environment, you can find wild animals such as: vizcachas, llamas, and alpacas. They are very common in the area, and many of them belong to the local population.

7 Lakes Tour Itinerary

To visit the 7 Lakes, the most recommended option is to join an organized tour with a reliable travel agency like SAM Travel Peru that can provide everything easily: entrance fees, transportation, meals, and guide service.

The itinerary usually starts with a hotel pick-up at 4:00 AM. From there, you will travel to Pacchanta. The journey takes about 3 and a half hours south of the city. Once you arrive at the small village, you will have breakfast at a local restaurant to regain energy before starting the hike.

The ascent includes nearly 3 hours of uphill hiking as we cross the mountains to reach the lake viewpoints. As mentioned before, you will see green, turquoise, and blue-colored lakes. These lakes have Quechua names, including:

  • • Comercocha Lake
  • • Alqacocha Lakes
  • • Patacocha Lakes
  • • China Otorongo Lake
  • • Orco Otorongo Lake
  • • Azulcocha Lake

While admiring the beauty of the place, your guide will teach you how to make an offering to thank the protective Apu for allowing you to pass through the area. After explanations about the region, drinking water, and regaining your energy, you will return to Pacchanta by the same trail.

Finally, with your heart full of memories and your camera full of amazing pictures, you will enjoy lunch and return to Cusco in the afternoon.

How to Visit the 7 Lakes on Your Own

If you have an adventurous spirit and would like to visit the mountain on your own, here are some tips:

To reach this impressive destination, you need to take public transportation next to the IPD. From there, vehicles travel to Ocongate and the town of Tinki. After approximately 2 and a half hours of travel, you will arrive and need to take a shared taxi to Pacchanta.

The total journey takes around 3 and a half hours and costs approximately USD 10 to USD 112. After that, the entrance fee to the protected area of the 7 Lakes is around USD 5, and that’s it—you are free to explore the impressive Ausangate Mountain.

If you are wondering about food, don’t worry. There is a wide variety of local restaurants where you can have breakfast and lunch.

Optional: Pacchanta Natural hot springs

One of the highlights of the area without a doubt is the Pacchanta hot springs. It is very popular for travelers, after doing the hike, to choose to relax in the thermal medicinal pools that will help you rest and recover the muscles that were in active movement.

The pools are located with a privileged view of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain, where you can also buy some drinks while admiring the beauty of the place you are visiting.

Finally, regarding the entrance cost, it is an average of 6 USD. There is no time limit included, so you can enjoy it as much as you want.

Where to stay in Pacchanta after the 7 Lakes tour

There is nothing better than not rushing while traveling, and because of that, many travelers choose to stay in the area and postpone their return until the next day. Between enjoying the hot springs, time can pass quickly, and there is nothing better than having the chance to rest among the mountains.

Now that the route has become popular, there are innovative glamping-style camps with panoramic Sky Domes where you can rest in a hotel-style bed, with private bathrooms and showers.

A true thousand-star hotel in a privileged area with amenities such as a jacuzzi, WiFi, dining service, and highly qualified staff.

Recommendations

To make the most of your visit to the 7 Lakes of Ausangate, we will leave you with a series of tips that you can follow:

  • • Whether you go on your own or with a tour service, we recommend staying in Cusco for at least 2 or 3 days before the hike or doing the visit at the end of your whole travel plan.
  • • Always carry a plastic rain poncho with you, the basic ones sold everywhere, so that if it rains, it will not interrupt your visit.
  • • Bring cash and in Peruvian soles, since in the area you can rent bathrooms, buy water, or local snacks. Also, if you feel tired, you can rent horses to help you on the climb to the viewpoint.
  • • If you are planning to stay in the area, we recommend packing a small bag where you can carry things such as a swimsuit, an extra change of clothes, and warm clothing.
  • • It is not necessary to book tours or entrance tickets for this tour, the spaces never sell out, but we do recommend planning it so you can keep it in mind.
  • • Due to the new camps and constructions in the area, there are currently electricity services and facilities such as Internet.
  • • If you have special food requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free, generally you will be served vegetables, noodles, or carbohydrates depending on the restrictions.

Fantastic 4 Day Salkantay Trek

I did the 4 day Salkantay trek with Joaquin (Guide), Matias (Chef) and Zenobio (Assistant Chef) and had the best time! The crew were so friendly and caring. It was well organised and they let us know what we would be doing each day. I struggled with the altitude and got a headache on day 2 so the crew gave me some oxygen to help. I felt very cared for. Joaquin was so knowledgable and gave us lots of information on the history of Machu Picchu. Matias and Zenobio’s cooking was incredible and much needed after long days of hiking. We had such a great time and I would highly recommend Sam Travels to anyone who is planning a trip to Peru!

Great experience with Sam Travel Peru!

I had a fantastic experience with Sam Travel Peru on the Salkantay Trek. Our guide Joaquin was great. He took great care of us throughout the journey, ensuring all our needs were met while also sharing fascinating historical insights that really added the experience. Chef Matias exceeded all expectations with his food. It was really delicious with generous portions. His assistant, Zenobio, was equally fantastic. The whole team had a great sense of humour, which made the experience even more enjoyable. When I started feeling unwell due to the altitude, they were incredibly attentive, making sure I was comfortable and providing any medicine I needed. I felt well looked after from start to finish. Would definitely recommend!

2 day Inca Trail with Sam Travel

Sam Travel has made our trip to Machu Picchu seamless. Joel Apaza was our guide and he has been extremely helpful throughout! I had stomach problems during our hike, not sure if it was food poisoning or altitude sickness, but I was extremely nauseated up to Winay Wayna which was the most strenuous part of the hike. He was very patient with us and even helped carry out daypacks with our heavy water bottles. We were stopping every 5 minutes because of my condition, but he was very gracious and still encouraging me that we can do it! We were able to reach the citadel after almost 9 hours and wouldn’t be able to do it if it wasn’t for Joel’s kindness. Definitely recommend!

We had a wonderful few days with Liz as our guide and Jair as our driver. We did a city tour of Cusco and then the Sacred Valley, culminating with an early start and Machupicchu on our final day. Liz was very patient and had incredible knowledgeable of all sites as well as telling us about all the history and importance of each site. She knew some ways to avoid packed areas and made each day special. Jair was a very skilled driver, courteous and made sure we were comfortable in the very clean car. Liz checked on us to make sure we arrived on time, smoothed the path for transport on the train and hotel stays, as well as entry to each site. Wilfredo was a good driver to take us back to Cusco and more than willing to stop so I could take photos of dairy cows. I’d highly recommend SAM tours as they had everything sorted for each amazing site, removed the stress and hassle of entry and logistics and made you feel like one of the family.

We did the 3-day Cusco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour with Sam Travel, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. This was a real bucket-list trip for us, and with somewhere as iconic as Machu Picchu, expectations can sometimes be unrealistically high. In this case, the experience far exceeded them and was the highlight of our four weeks travelling in South America. Sam Travel is locally owned and operated, and our guide Liz Montesinos is also local. Liz has a university degree in tourism and a deep love for her history, culture and people — and that really shows. Her enthusiasm and knowledge made the three days feel meaningful rather than rushed or superficial.

We had an amazing experience visiting Machu Picchu with our guide, Liz Montesinos from SAM Travel Peru. She was so knowledgeable and passionate about the history and culture. Liz was also incredibly kind and patient, making sure everyone in our group was comfortable and enjoying the day. Plus, she took some of the best photos of our trip. She knows all the best spots and took truly great photos and didn’t try to make us do cheesy poses like some other guides try to. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide and would absolutely recommend her to anyone visiting Machu Picchu. She really made our 2-day trip to Sacred Valley and Machu Pichu very special!

We just completed our 3 day Sacred Valley and Machu tour with Sam Travel Peru (our guide was Jose). Firstly they were very easy to deal with, and able to add in airport transfers etc as needed. Jose was an excellent guide for the whole 3 days from airport pick up to the end of the tour. Jose was able to amend the itinerary as we went to suit the weather conditions and our ability to walk through all of the sites, ensuring we still got to see all of the most picturesque and important parts of each site. Jose is exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate about Peru as well as being very adaptable and positive - would absolutely recommend him.

Powerful! This journey tests your humanity and leaves you in awe of yourself and the beauty that Pachamama provides. April 2024 We conquered the Inca trail and it was only made possible with the help and guidance from our expert guides Jean Pierre (JP) and Jimmy. The knowledge these gentlemen shared was admired by all of our group and the envy of other trail hikers who stopped to listen. The hike has many layers of challenges including language barriers, altitude sensitivities and food specifications. The team at Sam travel exceeded the needs and went above to ensure our comforts were met. A special mention must be made to Mario, the Chef who somehow performed magic with nutritious flavourful meals to satisfy even the pickiest consumers and Francesco who was our lead porter who orchestrated the harmony that happened behind the scenes to get everything done. Nothing less than marvellous from this team. Thank you to each of the group who made our trek a remarkable experience.

The whole experience was amazing. Ray, our guide answered all of our questions and definitely had our best interest in mind the whole time. Timothy the cook made fantastic food and somehow found a way to prepare a birthday cake with no notice! Boni our head porter and his whole crew were kind, accommodating, and had such upbeat attitudes which really made the experience great!

I spent two days with Sam Travel’s guide Raymier, who guided us through the one-day 12-km stretch of the Inca trail and then took us to Machu Picchu the next day. In my group, I was always the last one on the trail because I come from the coast and I’m not used to altitudes, and honestly I could also have prepared physically a little better. Raymier respected my pace, never rushed me, and supported me throughout the ardous trail. He had much knowledge to share. I speak Spanish, but ended up in an English tour, and Ray’s English was very good. He was funny, respectful, and versatile. He knew where to take all the best photos and patiently took photos of all of us. I would trust Sam Travel again especially if I was lucky enough to have Ray as a guide again.
