On January 30, as part of our social responsibility actions, the entire SAM Travel team traveled to the Salkantaypampa area to carry out a reforestation day. With great commitment and enthusiasm, our staff joined this initiative with the goal of contributing positively to environmental care, especially in the areas where we operate our tourism activities, such as the Salkantay route.
The beginning of the activity
Very early in the morning, we gathered at Regocijo Square to board the vehicles that would take us to Soraypampa. It was an opportunity for team bonding as well as to learn about the company’s new projects to innovate its tourism services: the panoramic domes. Upon arriving in Mollepata, around 7 AM, we put on our backpacks and began carrying Queuña tree saplings. Since it was the rainy season, the trail conditions were somewhat affected by landslides, but the experience was still very rewarding.
After almost 35 minutes of hiking, we arrived at our campsite in Soraypampa. The local staff treated us very well and welcomed us to what will be the company’s future campsites. Beautiful panoramic domes welcomed us so we could have breakfast and prepare for the hike ahead.
The route toward Salkantaypampa
With full stomachs, we continued the journey that brought us here, a one-hour hike to Salkantaypampa, located around 4,000 meters above sea level. The trail took us uphill through green mountains shaped by the rains, among rocks and clear streams.
While walking, we saw local horses and people from the area. After almost one hour, we arrived at the mountain where we could begin our reforestation work. We organized ourselves into teams to start the activity.
SAM Travel reforestation
After organizing ourselves, we started the work. Our cooks led the activity; with their experience and strength, they chose the places where the holes for the trees would be made.
We distributed the plants, and after the holes were prepared, the rest of the team began planting them. We planted nearly 700 tree saplings to improve the landscape and, above all, help revitalize the area.
After almost three and a half hours, we finished the work with happy hearts, proud to have contributed to the environment.
Why work in this area?
Many questions came up about why the Salkantay route was chosen. The answer is simple: as tourism operators, we must be responsible for the places where we work, such as the Inca Trail, Salkantay, Lares, Huchuy Qosqo, Ausangate, and others.
For this reason, this year our goal is to have more presence along the Salkantay route and promote more sustainable tourism, not only by supporting and strengthening the local economy but also by being responsible with the environment.
At the end of the day and the activity, we returned with happy hearts after successfully contributing to our purpose and more than ready for the 2026 season.
