Ollantaytambo Ruins
The ruins at Ollantaytambo tower over the town like a majestic ruler giving orders from above. Feel overwhelmed by the magnificence of the massive Inca terraces which totally close the valley. Once you are on the ruin enjoy the views of the spectacular Andes with their verdant slopes and snow-capped peaks. Ollantaytambo is another impressive Inca site that is filled with fascinating history, mystery and surrounded by beauty.
History
Ollantaytambo was one of many towns conquered by Pachacutec, the 9th Inca king who was instrumental in the transformation of the Cusco Kingdom into the powerful Inca Empire. He built Ollantaytambo Fortress in the 15th Century. Under his reign, Ollantaytambo served as a pivotal outpost for Inca nobles and laborers. Upon his death, the estate remained under the control of his lineage in accordance with the land privileges reserved for Inca kings.
Luckily, we have extensive written records about the history of Ollantaytambo in the years during and after the conquest. Manco Inca escaped from Cusco, he established his headquarters here and it became the site of the infamous Battle of Ollantaytambo in 1537. Facing an incoming attack, Manco Inca ordered the building of a river dam to flood the valley and used the terraces as higher ground to defeat the Spanish soldiers. The Inca rebel forces eventually retreated further into the jungle. Ollantaytambo fell firmly into the possession of the Spanish colonists. The town became a focal point for settlement in the Sacred Valley. Ollantaytambo was granted to Hernando Pizarro, brother of Conqueror Francisco Pizarro later as an important source of tribute and labor for the colonial state.
Architecture
The layout of the urban sector includes two clearly differentiated areas: residential and administrative. Exquisite stonework is displayed alongside impressive agricultural terraces, fountains, and irrigation canals. Ollantaytambo is arguably one of the most sophisticated of Inca constructions. Based on the chronicles of the conquest and the site’s strategic position, scholars long believed that this place was a fortress for military defense. But the high quality of stonework suggests that it also served as a long-term resting place for royal families transiting through the Sacred Valley, possibly following the footpaths from Cusco to Machu Picchu.
The purpose of Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo was a major administrative, agricultural and religious center, but no one knows for what was its main purpose. Some archaeologists say it was a military fortress, while others say it was a temple or a royal estate. There are a lot of buildings in Ollantaytambo that look like they were never finished, this is another interesting thing about the town. Why the Incas stopped doing their work is still a mystery. Some people say it was because of the Spanish took over.
What you will see at Ollantaytambo ruins
The Temple of the Sun
The temple sits atop a pyramid of seventeen terraces that face the main square. Getting to the top presents a challenge because of the condition and quantity of the stone stairs. Allow 20 to 30 minutes to climb to the top. The red rocks that completed this temple are now mostly gone, taken to build the colonial town below, only six monoliths survive in place, but they tell the story of a structure that must have been magnificent. On top of the Temple of the Sun, there is another structure called the Inca Huatana, a flat wall with small niches several inches deep, apparently used for astronomical observation.
The Terraces
A distinctive feature of the Sacred Valley region is the presence of terraces. They are evidence that local populations mastered the challenging environmental and geographic conditions of the Andes to create productive lands. The terraces of Ollantaytambo are a marvelous achievement of early engineering. They are close to 2,300 feet long, 190 feet wide and 50 feet deep. These terraces have high, polished stonewalls. The position of the structures relative to the sun and the slope of the hill allows them to absorb solar heat during the day and retain it at night when temperatures fall. This creates a microclimate that permits the growth of crops from lower altitudes.
The Storerooms
Pinkuylluna is a series of Qolcas that Incas built on top of the hill of the same name, northeast of the current town. Qolca in the Quechua language means food and grain stores. The Incas built Qolcas in the upper parts of the hills to take advantage of the cold and strong gusts of wind to preserve their food such as corn, wheat, and jerky, among others. The hike lasts 1 hour and the descent another hour, from there you will have other views of the beautiful Inca fortress.
The Quarry
The fortress was built with huge rocks brought from a quarry 6 kilometers away, near to the Urubamba River. To transport these stones, the Incas had to divert the entire water channel around them, meaning a masterful engineering work and much wisdom. You can hike to the quarry but it takes a few hours.
How to get to Ollantaytambo
Bus. From Cusco city you can take a bus to Ollantaytambo. The trip is around 2 hours through the wonderful Sacred Valley. It only costs a few soles and the bus is clean and tidy. Once you arrive walk to the ruins and hire a guide to do the tour. Guides can be hired at the gate of the ruins.
Tour. Most people buy a guided tour of the Sacred Valley which usually includes Ollantaytambo. The site normally is the last stop on the tour and your guide will give you a tour of the site. The other option is to do a private tour which will be more expensive but you get to do what you want to do and see what you want to see.
Train. It is possible to get from Cusco to Ollantaytambo by train. Although this is not popular it is possible. You can board the Vistadome train in Poroy and travel to Ollantaytambo, most people stay on the train and go directly to Machu Picchu.

Weather
Ollantaytambo Ruin is located in the Sacred Valley where the climate is better than Cusco. The days are mild and warm and the nights chilly. It is located 2792 meters above sea level and is 75 kms from Cusco.
Ollantaytambo Town
Said to be a living Inca Town, Ollantaytambo is filled with stone streets and waterways. There is a big market with colorful souvenirs located just in front of the ruins. On the town square find some great restaurants to have lunch or breakfast. The town is one of the most charming in the Sacred Valley. Many stay over night before getting the train to Aguas Calientes, there is a wide range of hotels available from budget to luxury.
Train to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo has the train station for the train to Machu Picchu. There are 2 companies to choose from, Peru Rail and Inca Rail, both have budget, luxury and super luxury trains. From Ollantaytambo you can take the train to Aguas Calientes, the town below Machu Picchu.
Cusco Visitors Ticket
When you arrive into Cusco, it is a great idea to get a Cusco Visitors ticket. With this ticket you can enter most of the sites in Cusco, which includes Ollantaytambo and the Sacred Valley. The cost will depend on if you buy a partial or full ticket.

Fantastic 4 Day Salkantay Trek
I did the 4 day Salkantay trek with Joaquin (Guide), Matias (Chef) and Zenobio (Assistant Chef) and had the best time! The crew were so friendly and caring. It was well organised and they let us know what we would be doing each day. I struggled with the altitude and got a headache on day 2 so the crew gave me some oxygen to help. I felt very cared for. Joaquin was so knowledgable and gave us lots of information on the history of Machu Picchu. Matias and Zenobio’s cooking was incredible and much needed after long days of hiking. We had such a great time and I would highly recommend Sam Travels to anyone who is planning a trip to Peru!

I had a fantastic experience with Sam Travel Peru on the Salkantay Trek. Our guide Joaquin was great. He took great care of us throughout the journey, ensuring all our needs were met while also sharing fascinating historical insights that really added the experience. Chef Matias exceeded all expectations with his food. It was really delicious with generous portions. His assistant, Zenobio, was equally fantastic. The whole team had a great sense of humour, which made the experience even more enjoyable. When I started feeling unwell due to the altitude, they were incredibly attentive, making sure I was comfortable and providing any medicine I needed. I felt well looked after from start to finish. Would definitely recommend!
2 day Inca Trail with Sam Travel
Sam Travel has made our trip to Machu Picchu seamless. Joel Apaza was our guide and he has been extremely helpful throughout! I had stomach problems during our hike, not sure if it was food poisoning or altitude sickness, but I was extremely nauseated up to Winay Wayna which was the most strenuous part of the hike. He was very patient with us and even helped carry out daypacks with our heavy water bottles. We were stopping every 5 minutes because of my condition, but he was very gracious and still encouraging me that we can do it! We were able to reach the citadel after almost 9 hours and wouldn’t be able to do it if it wasn’t for Joel’s kindness. Definitely recommend!
Two day tour of sacred valley and machu picchu
Carlos estrada was our guide for the 2 day sacred Valley and machu picchu tour .He was very knowledgeable and really courteous. As I am a man in his sixties and was in a group of twenty year old he paced the trip brilliantly .Great guy and guide
We had a wonderful few days with Liz as our guide and Jair as our driver. We did a city tour of Cusco and then the Sacred Valley, culminating with an early start and Machupicchu on our final day. Liz was very patient and had incredible knowledgeable of all sites as well as telling us about all the history and importance of each site. She knew some ways to avoid packed areas and made each day special. Jair was a very skilled driver, courteous and made sure we were comfortable in the very clean car. Liz checked on us to make sure we arrived on time, smoothed the path for transport on the train and hotel stays, as well as entry to each site. Wilfredo was a good driver to take us back to Cusco and more than willing to stop so I could take photos of dairy cows. I’d highly recommend SAM tours as they had everything sorted for each amazing site, removed the stress and hassle of entry and logistics and made you feel like one of the family.
We did the 3-day Cusco, Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu tour with Sam Travel, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. This was a real bucket-list trip for us, and with somewhere as iconic as Machu Picchu, expectations can sometimes be unrealistically high. In this case, the experience far exceeded them and was the highlight of our four weeks travelling in South America. Sam Travel is locally owned and operated, and our guide Liz Montesinos is also local. Liz has a university degree in tourism and a deep love for her history, culture and people — and that really shows. Her enthusiasm and knowledge made the three days feel meaningful rather than rushed or superficial.

We just completed our 3 day Sacred Valley and Machu tour with Sam Travel Peru (our guide was Jose). Firstly they were very easy to deal with, and able to add in airport transfers etc as needed. Jose was an excellent guide for the whole 3 days from airport pick up to the end of the tour. Jose was able to amend the itinerary as we went to suit the weather conditions and our ability to walk through all of the sites, ensuring we still got to see all of the most picturesque and important parts of each site. Jose is exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate about Peru as well as being very adaptable and positive - would absolutely recommend him.
Powerful! This journey tests your humanity and leaves you in awe of yourself and the beauty that Pachamama provides. April 2024 We conquered the Inca trail and it was only made possible with the help and guidance from our expert guides Jean Pierre (JP) and Jimmy. The knowledge these gentlemen shared was admired by all of our group and the envy of other trail hikers who stopped to listen. The hike has many layers of challenges including language barriers, altitude sensitivities and food specifications. The team at Sam travel exceeded the needs and went above to ensure our comforts were met. A special mention must be made to Mario, the Chef who somehow performed magic with nutritious flavourful meals to satisfy even the pickiest consumers and Francesco who was our lead porter who orchestrated the harmony that happened behind the scenes to get everything done. The whole experience was amazing. Ray, our guide answered all of our questions and definitely had our best interest in mind the whole time. Timothy the cook made fantastic food and somehow found a way to prepare a birthday cake with no notice! Boni our head porter and his whole crew were kind, accommodating, and had such upbeat attitudes which really made the experience great!
I spent two days with Sam Travel’s guide Raymier, who guided us through the one-day 12-km stretch of the Inca trail and then took us to Machu Picchu the next day. In my group, I was always the last one on the trail because I come from the coast and I’m not used to altitudes, and honestly I could also have prepared physically a little better. Raymier respected my pace, never rushed me, and supported me throughout the ardous trail. He had much knowledge to share. I speak Spanish, but ended up in an English tour, and Ray’s English was very good. He was funny, respectful, and versatile. He knew where to take all the best photos and patiently took photos of all of us. I would trust Sam Travel again especially if I was lucky enough to have Ray as a guide again.
